Chapter 13

Jack had never seen a kid put away as much food as little Look-Away had just done. He’d eaten more than Jack had, and he had a healthy appetite for a man. This boy had eaten his entire meal and then a second helping—courtesy of the barmaid who had been taken with the mite, and his enthusiasm for the stew they’d been served.

The boy sat back against his chair and popped the last piece of gravy-soaked bread into his mouth. One hand rested on his distended belly. “Now that was a meal,” he said with satisfaction.

Jack could only laugh. “No, I’m pretty sure that was at least two meals, knowing Greene.”

The boy’s eyes flew open. “Oh no, that would have been pro’lly four or five meals from ‘im.”

Jack gave a little laugh, although there was nothing funny in that tidbit of knowledge. “Well now, are ye goin’ to be able to keep yer eyes open till later when I need ye to work?”

“Oh yes, sir! I won’t fall asleep on ye. Promise!”

“All right then. Let’s go. I’ve got a bit of a job to do myself before we get to yers.” Jack left a few coins on the table, and then followed the lad out of the pub.

They walked a couple of blocks to the beach then stood looking out at the waves as they crashed onto the shore, retreated, and came bounding in once again.

“I ain’t never seen the sea afore,” Liam said.

“It ain’t the sea. It’s the channel,” Jack corrected him.

“Well, I ain’t never seen that neither. I’ve seen the Thames, but it don’t have big waves like this.”

“No, it doesn’t,” Jack agreed. He turned his face to the wind and inhaled. He didn’t get air like this in the city, and he wasn’t entirely accustomed to it but it was useful. He filled his lungs with the life-giving force.

He could practically feel his powers rejuvenate with every breeze and breath.

“Whatcha doin’?”

Jack took in another deep breath. “Breathing in the air. Don’t it smell good?”

“I don’ know. It don’t smell normal to me, but I only smelled city air afore,” Look-Away said. He too turned his face to the breeze and took in a deep breath, mimicking Jack.

“I need the air to help build my powers,” Jack told the boy.

The child cocked his head. “What builds mine?”

Jack turned and looked down at him. “I don’t know. Yer probably Air too. Does taking in deep breaths make you feel anything?”

The boy turned his face to the wind, closed his eyes, and took in a breath. “Makes me tingle a little.”

Jack nodded. “Yup. Yer Air.”

“Same as ye?”

“Same as me.”

A smile slipped on to the kid’s face that made Jack’s stomach do a little flip. Never in his life had he thought much about children. Never had time for them, even when he was one himself. But somehow, being with this boy made him think that having one of his own might not be all that bad a thing. He would be just like this boy, Jack imagined, and somehow that made him feel good.
